Marked - A Twisted Story Ebook
Blurb
I couldn't live without pain.
I'd been born into a life of torture and I walked the lonely road of torment, praying for mercy. I was scarred mentally. I was deformed physically. I was mutilated emotionally.
I was a sailor lost at sea, a soul lost in limbo, a shell of a man with no hope.
Until I found her. My fiery-haired, crystal-eyed little one who brought light to a life that knew nothing but darkness.
But she had dark shadows of her own. A past filled with anguish and brutality. A future that promised nothing but the barren life I understood too well.
We were two victims. Two loveless souls searching for something to live for. We were monsters. We were evil. We were doomed.
Our scars ran deep and our grasp on each other depended only on the search for punishment - for the next slice of pain that made us feel alive. We lived for the hurt, we lived for the anger. We lived to mark each other with intensity, belonging, and our own messed up version of recovery.
This isn't a love story. It's a story that cuts. It's a story that captivates. It's a story that questions morals and crosses the line of sanity.
It's a twisted story, one you won't see coming until it's too late...

DI'S REVIEW

4 Twisted Stars!

Very dark themes:
Child abuse/Non-Con/Sadomasochism/Self Harming/Violent/Bloody.

My first book by Rebecca Sherwin, I'm glad I picked this up, I've added another author to my list of, they have no limits. I'm torn on how to rate this story, it's truly heart-breaking and dark. I'm going to tell you what I did and didn't like, and let you make your mind up. I warned you up there, so be prepared before reading. This is a pitch black read that will leave you slightly sick to your stomach, or if your like me, a twisted smile on your face.

The first part of the story is the abuse that was suffered from the hands of a man who was supposed to be the protector. It broke my twisted heart, takes a lot for me to feel, and boy did I. I wanted to reach inside the pages and murder, cuddle, hold... A mixed bag of emotions bled from the pages, and I soaked it up. I was on the edge of my seat praying for solace. I fell in love with this author's way with words, her story-telling. The subject matter was as dark as one could go, but I couldn't stop reading. We witness the beginning, the middle, and 'sort of' the end, it's tragic, twisted, heart-breaking, soul-sucking, and everything in between.

What bothered me.
I might regret saying this, but I almost wish the author broke this story into two books. I had to continue, I couldn't stop if I tried, this story was incredibly long. I can't believe I said that. But maybe two books would've been best for me. I was ready for the end at 60%. By no means is it the author's fault, just my preference. I felt Benny to my core, I longed for peace, even if it was dark, even if it ended in a twisted relationship of doom. I think the author tried to drill it in, but it wasn't necessary, if you weren't rooting for Benny by the first half, then this story just wasn't for you. The inner monologue was drawn out, I found myself skimming some of it, by then I had already knew the motives, the feelings, the hurt, the battle, I felt it. I felt sad for skimming.

Dear Benny, I love you, but I can't deal with your inner monologue anymore, because I get you, babe. And I still love you. I'm like, go kill someone and make yourself feel better, Ben. I'll forgive you, so will anyone that's read your story. You really aren't a monster in the scheme of things, your fighting to survive, or surviving to fight. So, with all that being said.

I highly recommend to the readers that like to push their boundaries. If you love unconventional endings, tragic beginnings, and deeply flawed characters. You must read this one. This book isn't for the fans of mildly-dark themes. It's a twisted tale of finding yourself when your soul is at sea. If it's wrong, then I don't want to be right.

Excerpt
“Relax,” she said with a smile. “I won't hurt you.” I trusted her. It was an alien feeling to me, and one I hadn’t felt since I met Freddy. “Ready?” I nodded, laid my head back and squeezed my eyes shut. “You know,” Faith said as the first prick touched my skin and I flinched, my body tensing. “There are many meanings behind the significance of the swallow.” I hummed, signalling for her to go further, lost in the sensation of her hand on my stomach and the needle pricking my skin. She was right – you can't count the number of times the needle pierces. It didn’t hurt; I’d felt enough pain to know what it really felt like, but this wasn’t pain. It was uncomfortable pleasure. It was pleasurable discomfort. “Traditionally it’s chosen by sailors. It symbolises the miles of ocean they’ve travelled.” Her voice was soft and comforting, allowing me to drift away from constant defence, like a sailor who had stopped rowing to feel the ebb and flow of the sea beneath him. “And some say it means ‘these fists fly’. Fighting talk, from boxers back in the day.” I slipped into the lull created by Faith and her soft touch, the way she made branding my skin forever feel as natural as breathing. “They’re usually inked in a pair on the chest, and the sailors believed that if they were lost at sea, the swallows would carry their souls to find peace.” That was exactly how I felt on the leather bed, exposed and open without saying a word. I felt like I’d taken a slice of peace to calm my lost soul.
